Big Google Slides Updates You (Probably) Missed But Shouldn’t

You ever open up Google Slides in a rush — maybe class starts in 10 minutes or you’ve got a client call — and BAM, you’re hit with a pop-up about new features?

You’re torn between “get outta my way” and “ooooh, shiny new stuff.” Yep, been there.

Well, I was that person. I swatted the popup away like a mosquito but came back later… and thank goodness I did. Because Google Slides got a whole glow-up, and it’s not just fluff — this is real productivity magic.

Here’s the lowdown on the latest Google Slides updates, broken down so you can decide what’s worth a click and what’s just “meh.”

New Stock Image Library (Yes, Finally!)

Google Slides now has its own stock image library built in. No more opening 12 tabs hunting down royalty-free images. Now you’ve got:

✅ A searchable image sidebar

✅ Royalty-free images right inside Slides

✅ No need for third-party sites like Unsplash

Pro Tip: Google doesn’t automatically cite the image, but it gives you the info. Add your citations — it’s just good practice.

Find it under Insert > Image, too.

Templates & Themes That Don’t Feel Like 2010

The old themes were… not it. But now?

  • New templates with fancy names like Workshop Facilitation Classic and Portfolio Bold
  • Multiple slide types inside each theme
  • A quick way to level-up your deck’s design

You can go full theme or mix and match slides. Zero judgment.

Building Blocks = Slide Lego for Grownups

Building Blocks are reusable chunks to spice up your slides without redoing everything.

Includes:

  • 📌 Text callouts
  • 📊 Charts and tables
  • 💬 Quotes and comment bubbles
  • 🏷️ Labels and badges
  • 📅 Agendas, timelines, and more

Grouped into 13 categories. Drag. Drop. Look awesome.

Proportional Scaling for Groups (Wait, Wasn’t That a Thing?)

You can now group elements and resize them proportionally, keeping the layout + spacing intact.

Cool? Sure.

New? Eh… a little confusing, because I thought this was how it worked before. Maybe now it’s just officially smooth.

Speaker Spotlight & Slides Recording (But Only for the Cool Kids)

Game-changer… if you can access it.

Features:

  • 🎥 Record yourself presenting with your face in a special spotlight
  • 👀 Great for flipped lessons or updates for families
  • 📤 Share recordings straight from Slides

But heads-up: this is only available with Education Plus accounts.

Not sure if you have an Education Plus account? Just look for “Speaker Spotlight” or “Slides Recording” in your Slides sidebar.

Imagen 3: The AI Image Generator (Almost Sci-Fi)

This is next-level:

Type in a prompt (e.g. “a cat DJ in space”) and watch AI build an image right inside your slide.

Features:

  • 🎨 Choose your image style (sketch, photo, cartoon)
  • 📐 Set your layout size (portrait, square, landscape)
  • 🌈 It can even auto-match your slide color scheme

BUT… it’s only available with Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium.

If it’s not showing in your Insert > Image menu, that’s probably why.

What Do You Think?

Used any of these yet? Got a favorite? Did I totally miss the hidden gem?

If this helped, share it with a teacher, techie, or anyone who makes Slides sing. 🎤🎬
